Product Description
Baicalin powder, a flavonoid compound, is extracted and isolated from the dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a plant in the Lamiaceae family. It is one of the main active components of Scutellaria baicalensis. At room temperature, it appears as a pale yellow powder with a bitter taste.
Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, commonly known as Huang Qin, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of therapeutic use. Its primary bioactive component, baicalin, is a flavonoid compound exhibiting a wide range of biological activities. In traditional Chinese medicine, Huang Qin is characterized by its cold and bitter properties and is associated with the lung, gallbladder, spleen, large intestine, and small intestine meridians. It is traditionally used for clearing heat and drying dampness, purging fire and detoxification, hemostasis, and fetal stabilization. Modern research has demonstrated that baicalin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-allergic, photoprotective, and skin-whitening effects, leading to its broad applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. Baicalin present in Scutellaria baicalensis extract can effectively scavenge free radicals, inhibit melanin production, and enhance skin's antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, it exhibits significant ultraviolet (UV) absorption capabilities, positioning it as a potential natural sunscreen agent. Additionally, baicalin can modulate immune function and alleviate inflammatory responses, suggesting its beneficial effects on skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis.

The production process of baicalin primarily involves solvent extraction, acid precipitation, and purification steps. Several common production methods are outlined below:
1. Traditional Solvent Extraction Method
Process Flow:
Raw Material Pretreatment: Scutellaria baicalensis roots are pulverized to a mesh size of 10-40.
Extraction: The powdered material is extracted 2-3 times with 8-15 times the volume of solvent (e.g., 75% ethanol or water) under reflux at 85°C for 1.5-2 hours each time.
Filtration and Concentration: The combined extracts are filtered and then concentrated under reduced pressure until no alcohol odor remains.
Acid Precipitation: The concentrated extract's pH is adjusted to 1-2 with acid, maintained at 80°C for 1 hour, allowed to stand, and then filtered to collect the precipitate.
Purification: The precipitate is dissolved in an alkaline solution (e.g., sodium hydroxide) to adjust the pH to 7.0, then redissolved in ethanol, filtered, and reprecipitated by adjusting the pH to 2.0 with acid. After standing, the precipitate is dried to obtain crude baicalin.
Advantages: Mature technology, simple operation.
Disadvantages: Long production cycle, large solvent consumption, low extraction yield.
2. Ultrasonic Extraction Method
Process Flow:
Raw Material Pretreatment: Scutellaria baicalensis powder is mixed with ethanol at a specific ratio.
Ultrasonic Extraction: Extraction is performed in an ultrasonic extraction apparatus, controlling parameters such as ultrasonic time and ethanol concentration.
Filtration and Concentration: The extract is filtered and then concentrated under reduced pressure.
Purification: The concentrated extract's pH is adjusted to 1-2 with acid, followed by precipitation and drying to obtain baicalin.
Advantages: High extraction efficiency, short operation time, environmentally friendly.
Disadvantages: Higher equipment cost, suitable for small-scale production.
3. Macroporous Adsorption Resin Method
Process Flow:
Extraction: Scutellaria baicalensis powder is extracted under reflux with 75% ethanol, and the extracts are combined.
Filtration and Concentration: The extract is filtered and then concentrated under reduced pressure.
Adsorption: The concentrated extract is passed through a macroporous adsorption resin column (e.g., AB-8), controlling the loading and elution flow rates.
Elution and Purification: Baicalin is eluted with 50% ethanol, the eluate is collected, concentrated under reduced pressure, and then dried to obtain baicalin.
Advantages: High purity (can reach over 85%).
Disadvantages: Complex process, higher cost.
4. Fermentation Extraction Method
Process Flow:
Fermentation: Scutellaria baicalensis powder is mixed and fermented with probiotics. The baicalin content and bioavailability are significantly increased during fermentation.
Extraction and Purification: The fermented Scutellaria baicalensis powder is extracted with a solvent, and subsequent steps are similar to the traditional solvent extraction method.
Advantages: Improves baicalin bioavailability, and enhances efficacy.
Disadvantages: Fermentation conditions are difficult to control, a complex process.
5. Optimized Acid Precipitation Method
Process Flow:
Extraction: Scutellaria baicalensis powder is extracted twice under reflux with boiling water.
Concentration: The extract is concentrated under reduced pressure to a specific gravity of 1.1-1.3.
Alcohol Precipitation: Low-carbon alcohol (e.g., ethanol) is added to the concentrated extract, and the mixture is heated for extraction at 40-70°C.
Acid Precipitation: The concentrated extract's pH is adjusted to 1-2 with acid, maintained at 80°C for 1 hour, allowed to stand, and then filtered.
Purification: The precipitate is washed with water until the pH reaches 6-7, then rinsed with 50% ethanol and dried to obtain baicalin.
Advantages: Higher extraction yield and purity, suitable for industrial-scale production.
Disadvantages: Still requires the use of acidic solutions, and specific equipment requirements.
Production Process of Shaanxi Jiuyuan Biotechnology:
Organic Solvent Extraction + Microwave Extraction + Macroporous Adsorption Resin Purification
The following is an analysis of the advantages of this process:
Efficient Extraction:
Organic Solvent Extraction: The use of ethanol and water as solvents effectively dissolves baicalin, resulting in a high extraction efficiency.
Microwave Extraction: Microwave extraction offers uniform and rapid heating, significantly reducing extraction time. Compared to traditional reflux extraction, the extraction time can be shortened from several hours to several minutes.
Combined Process: The combination of organic solvent extraction and microwave extraction further enhances extraction efficiency and reduces energy consumption.
Good Purification Effect:
Macroporous Adsorption Resin Purification: Macroporous adsorption resins exhibit excellent selective adsorption properties, effectively removing impurities and increasing the purity of baicalin. By optimizing the resin type and operating conditions, the purity of baicalin can reach 80%-90%.
Environmentally Friendly:
Solvent Recovery and Utilization: Organic solvents (such as ethanol) can be recovered and reused through vacuum distillation, reducing solvent waste and environmental pollution.
Reduced Acid and Alkali Usage: Compared to the traditional acid precipitation method, this process reduces the amount of acid and alkali used, minimizing equipment corrosion and operational risks.
Suitable for Industrial Production:
Simple Operation: The entire process flow is relatively simple, easy to operate and control, making it suitable for large-scale industrial production.
Controllable Costs: Although the cost of macroporous adsorption resins is relatively high, optimizing the process and the reuse of the resin can effectively control production costs.

Main Effects And Functions Of Baicalin Powder
Anti-inflammatory Activity: Baicalin exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), thereby mitigating inflammatory processes.
